Abstract
Aqueous solutions of beryllium salts for example, the sulphate, are purified by contacting them with zinc hydroxide in the presence of a soluble fluoride, the pH of the solution being maintained at a value lower than that at which beryllium hydroxide would be precipitated, and then separating the solution from the zinc hydroxide. There is preferably present in the solution at least two atoms of fluorine for each atom of beryllium. The zinc hydroxide may be formed in situ for example by having present in the solution a soluble zinc salt and adding a base to the solution to adjust the pH to between 7 and 10, thereby precipitating the zinc hydroxide. The precipitated zinc hydroxide may be recovered and employed to treat further batches of beryllium solution. Any zinc remaining in the solution may be removed by treating with a soluble sulphide, for example ammonium, sodium, or hydrogen sulphide. Beryllium may be recovered from the purified solution by precipitation as the hydroxide, for example by the addition of sodium hydroxide or ammonia. A sodium hypochlorite solution may be added to the solution to be purified to oxidize any iron or manganese present and thereby to facilitate their precipitation. The solution may be prepared by calcining beryl and sodium fluosilicate and leaching.
