Abstract
An aqueous sulphuric acid containing calcium and possibly iron, titanium and/or other impurities is concentrated by evaporation in the presence of generally some 2-5% by weight of a microcrystalline material serving to hinder the deposition of calcium-containing scale. Particularly suitable is the monohydrate of ferrous sulphate precipitated from the acid (when the latter contains iron impurity) at concentrations higher than that at which calcium scale is normally encountered. The process can be operated by adding this precipitate as retrieved from the filter of a subsequent evaporation stage, or by contriving its formation in situ by taking the evaporation stage in which the calcium precipitates to a much higher concentration, say at least 38% by weight. Acid from the production of titanium dioxide by way of the sulphate can readily be concentrated in this way without scale deposition.
