Abstract

1531459 Solutions of basic aluminium compounds; water treatment LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd 22 March 1976 [5 April 1975] 14038/75 Headings C1A and C1C An aqueous solution of a phosphate-containing basic aluminium compound is prepared by: (a) reacting aluminium sulphate solution with phosphoric acid at elevated temperature; (b) introducing chloride by the addition of hydrochloric acid or calcium chloride; (c) basifying by the addition of calcium oxide, hydroxide or carbonate in order to effect preferential precipitation of calcium sulphate; steps (b) and (c) being conducted at a temperature of above 60‹ C., and thereafter: (d) causing or permitting the solution to cool quickly to below 60‹ C. The chloride is preferably introduced prior to or at the same time as the calcium carbonate, oxide or hydroxide. The solution, optionally diluted, may be used for water treatment, especially for dewatering sewage sludge (Example 3).
