Abstract
Magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, cadmium and manganese phosphates and zinc ammonium phosphate are prepared by preparing an aqueous solution containing the metal ions and phosphate ions, sufficient hydrogen ions to prevent the phosphate from precipitating, and also urea or a hydrolyzable urea derivative. The solution is then heated to hydrolyze the urea or hydrolyzable urea derivative, thereby reducing the hydrogen ion concentration, with the result that a homogeneous precipitate of the phosphate is obtained. Impurities may be removed by first heating the solution so that a slight precipitate is obtained, filtering, and then heating the filtrate to effect complete precipitation. A continuous preparation may be effected by passing the solution through a heated vessel or tube. The product may be used in luminescent materials. The phosphate ions may be added in the form of a soluble phosphate, for example ammonium phosphate, and the hydrogen ions may be provided by a mineral acid.
