Abstract
An aqueous solution of phosphate ions free from iron ions is prepared from a solution containing phosphate ions and iron ions by the following steps: precipitation of iron hydroxide in alkaline solution; precipitation of phosphate ions in the filtrate free from halogen ions in an acid solution by adding bismuth salts; separating the precipitated bismuth phosphate; dissolving this precipitate in aqueous hydrogen halogen acid; precipitation of bismuth ions either as the sulphide by the addition of hydrogen sulphide or as bismuthyl salt by hydrolysis, separation of the precipitate and, if necessary, evaporation of the filtrate to free the phosphoric acid solution from unwanted volatile acids. The process is particularly applicable to the production of a radioactive P32 preparation from phosphorus iron which has been bombarded by deuterons. This iron is decomposed, for example by an alkaline oxidation mixture of solid sodium hydroxide and sodium nitrate, whereafter it is lixiviated and filtered thereby removing the iron as hydroxide together with radioactive cobalt and manganese.
