Abstract
543,887. Manganous sulphate. CONSOLIDATED MINING & SMELTING CO. OF CANADA, Ltd. April 4, 1940, No. 6100. Convention date, April 18, 1939. Drawings to Specification. [Class 1 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] In the purification of solutions of manganous sulphate a stream of hydrogen sulphide is passed through the solution to cause complete precipitation of metallic impurities as sulphides, the solution at the same time being in contact with excess of a solid reagent (e.g. calcium carbonate) which will neutralize the sulphuric acid produced and maintain the pH of the solution at a point such that the precipitated impurities are not dissolved but no manganous sulphide is precipitated, the precipitate being separated and the excess hydrogen sulphide removed from the solution. The solution may first be treated by acidification and oxidation to convert iron into the ferric state and then precipitating it as ferric hydroxide. Sulphides of cobalt, nickel and cadmium are among the compounds precipitated by the hydrogen sulphide treatment. The solution of manganous sulphate finally obtained is employed as electrotype for the deposit of metallic manganese.
