Abstract

Aqueous solutions of metal nitrates are converted to a different mineral acid salt of the metal by boiling the nitrate solution with formaldehyde and the mineral acid required. The initial nitrate solution may also contain nitric acid and the formaldehyde used must be sufficient to react with all the nitrate ions and the nitric acid present in the solution. The chlorides, sulphates and perchlorates of metals such as iron, uranium, lithium and sodium may be so prepared. According to an example a solution of uranyl nitrate in dilute nitric acid was treated with dilute sulphuric acid chemically equivalent to the uranyl nitrate and the solution was boiled with sufficient formaldehyde to destroy all the nitric acid present and react with all the nitrate ions present. Substantially pure uranyl sulphate was produced. Specifications 761,252 and 784,609 are referred to.
