Abstract
A sublimable polycarboxylic acid, e.g. terephthalic acid, containing an impurity more volatile than the acid to be purified, is purified by heating the impure acid in the presence of a carrier gas to form a vaporous mixture of the acid and its more volatile impurity, adding the same acid in purified solid form to the vaporous mixture, and separating the resulting solid condensate of purified acid from the mixture. The process is of particular use in the purification of terephthalic, containing p-carboxy benzaldehyde as impurity, which is obtained by the oxidation of p-xylene. The preferred carrier gas is steam. The impure acid may be subjected to the treatment more than once to get a purer product. When the acid is vaporized and condensed in several stages some of the condensed acid from one stage is separated and recycled for use as the condensing medium in that stage and the remainder is revaporized in the next stage. When inpure terephthalic acid prepared by the oxidation of xylene is purified by the process it is advisable to carry out a preliminary purification e.g. by leaching or washing with a suitable solvent.
