Abstract

A method for evaporating aluminium tri-halide comprises introducing finely divided solid tri-halide into a superheated gaseous stream thereof (e.g. at 600-800 DEG C.), preferably at a point intermediate the ends of the evaporating zone. The gas produced may be used in a sub-halide distillation process for the recovery of aluminium. In this process a portion of the AlX3 gas, from which the AlX has been removed by condensation, may be condensed to remove gaseous by-product impurities and a portion may be used as the gaseous feed to the evaporator of the invention. In Fig. 2 solid AlX3 67 is fed into the gas stream ascending from pipe 68 through plate 69 and the AlX3 vapour is drawn off through pipe 70.
