Abstract

A process for recovering germanium comprises treating a germanium-containing sulphuric acid solution with an aqueous extract of tannin which contains a sodium salt of ethylene diaminotetra-acetic acid and thereafter separating the resulting germaniumcontaining precipitate from the solution. The sulphuric acid solution of germanium may be obtained by treating a germanium-containing substance with sulphuric acid to dissolve the germanium. Thus roasted blende may be leached with sulphuric acid to obtain the germanium solution. In an example an aqueous sulphuric acid solution of germanium-containing sulphates of zinc, cadmium copper and iron as well as arsenic and antimony compounds is treated with a concentrated aqueous solution of powdered chestnut extract containing sodium salts of ethylene diaminotetraacetic acid to precipitate the germanium compound with tannin together with arsenic and antimony impurities.
