Abstract

1315785 Tetrafluorodibromoethane KALICHEMIE AG 2 July 1971 [31 Aug 1970] 31201/71 Heading C2C Tetrafluoro-1,2-dibromo-ethane is prepared by reaction of tetrafluoroethylene with a solution of bromine in tetrafluoro-1,2-dibromoethane at 0‹ to 50‹ C. Reaction is preferably effected continuously in countercurrent using a combination of a subsidiary reactor, into the foot of which tetrafluoroethylene is introduced, and a main reactor to the top of which is fed the bromine solution in an amount such as to provide an excess of at least 0À5% wt. of the stoichiometric quantity of bromine. The reaction product still containing bromine is then fed to the subsidiary reactor in which tetrafluoroethylene is present in stoichiometric excess, and the tetrafluorodibromoethane is continuously withdrawn from the subsidiary reactor. The exhaust gases leaving the main reactor may be washed with tetrafluoro-1,2-dibromoethane, and the wash liquid recycled to the main reactor.
