Abstract

1,262,756. Distillation of nitric acid. SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 30 May, 1969 [31 May, 1968], No. 27642/69. Heading BIB. [Also in Division Cl] Nitric acid of concentration more than 97% by wt. and substantially free from N 2 O 4 is produced by feeding 80-90% nitric acid into distillation zone 8, feeding nitric acid of greater than 97% and containing 20-30% by wt. of N 2 O 4 into the upper part of stripping zone 7 and passing the vapour from the distillation zone 8, via chimney 25, into the lower part of zone 7, withdrawing nitric acid of concentration greater than 97% by wt. and free from N 2 O 4 from zone 7 via pipe 11, and withdrawing 68-72% nitric acid from zone 8 via pipe 23. Nitric acid at the bottom of zone 7 may be passed into zone 8 via pipes 18 and 19. The stripping-distillation-tower may be operated at 1-3 atmospheres and is heated via steam pipes 10 and 19.
