Abstract
1501823 Purification of percarboxylic acids BAYER AG and DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT 28 April 1976 [30 April 1975] 17175/76 Heading C2C Percarboxylic acid solutions in organic solvents, which are capable of forming azeotropes minimum-boiling with water, having a b.pt. lower than that of the percarboxylic acid, are simultaneously freed of water and H 2 O 2 by distilling the solution so that at least 1À5 times the amount of organic solvent which is required for the removal of the water content of the solution as an azeotrope is vaporized and withdrawn as the top product which is separated into an aqueous phase containing H 2 O 2 and a phase which contains the organic solvent, and returning the latter as reflux to the distillation, a substantially anhydrous and H 2 O 2 -free organic solution of the percarboxylic being obtained as the sump product from the distillation. Preferably 1À5-40 times the required amount of solvent is removed in the distillation which may be conducted under a pressure of 100-400 mm.Hg. The process is advantageously used to purify benzene solutions of 15-25 wt. per cent percarboxylic acid, e.g. perpropionic acid, with 0À5-5 wt. per cent of both water and H 2 O 2 .
