Abstract
Impure lactic acid is purified by subjecting it to steam distillation in the presence of at least 0.01 per cent of a non-volatile or substantially non-volatile organic or inorganic acid stronger than lactic acid, at a pressure of about or above atmospheric pressure, the temperature of the distillation mixture being maintained at 140 DEG 200 DEG C. and the steam being maintained at 170-250 DEG C. The acid may be ortho- or pyrophosphoric acid and the process may be discontinuous or continuous. In an example 88 grams of technical 92.5 per cent lactic acid and 0.5 per cent phosphoric acid in a distillation device on an oil bath at 190 DEG C. were subjected to a distillation with steam at a temperature of 210 DEG C. and a gauge pressure of 0.2 atmospheres. After concentration, a distillate is obtained which is colourless and fulfils the U.S.P. standards.
