Abstract

Phenols are extracted from tars, tar oils and other hydrocarbon oils by means of an amide, e.g. urea or acetamide, thiourea or guanidine. Addition compounds are formed between the phenols and the extractant. The extractant is advantageously employed in aqueous solution. The extraction is improved by the addition of paraffic or naphthenic hydrocarbons. In an example, a mixture of tar oil (containing 40% of phenol) and Fischer-Tropsch kogasin, which mixture had a boiling-range of 180 DEG -230 DEG C., was shaken for 5 seconds at 32 DEG C., with a solution containing 90 grms. of urea per 100 c.c. of water. The mixture was then allowed to separate into two layers; and the raffinate was extracted, at 20 DEG C., with fresh urea solution. The raffinate was then free from phenol; and the extract contained no hydrocarbon or other impurities. The addition compounds may be decomposed by heat into free phenols and recovered extractant. The extractant solution may be purified by treating it with a solid of large surface area, e.g. activated carbon, bleaching - earth, ion-exchangers, silica gel and pumice; and a suitable apparatus for this purpose is described wherein active carbon is carried along in a stream of the solution. In another embodiment of the process, the extractant is first used to extract aliphatics from a mixture of hydrocarbons boiling below 200 DEG C., and the extractant-aliphatic hydrocarbon addition compound is then used to extract phenols from higher-boiling oils. The aliphatics remain in the dephenolated oil, and may be recovered therefrom by rectification.
