Abstract
Water is removed from a mixture comprising alcohols having 2 or more carbon atoms and water by extracting the mixture with hexane and separating hexane from the extract obtained, thereby recovering the alcohols. The process is particularly useful for purifying the mixture of higher alcohols obtained as a result of the partial oxidation of normally gaseous hydrocarbons such as propane. The formaldehyde and acetaldehyde present in such a mixture are separated first. The resulting mixture may then be subjected to hydrogenation and the methanol present may be separated by fractionating the resulting mixture at a temperature of about 71-77 DEG C. The remainder is extracted with hexane and preferably the extract is fractionated to recover substantially water-free alcohols and an azeotrope containing water, hexane and a small amount of higher alcohols. To recover the alcohols from the azeotrope water is added and a part of the alcohol and hexane recovered from the azeotrope may then be returned to the zone in which the azeotrope is found. The remaining hexane and alcohol can be recycled to the hexane extractor. The remaining water, hexane and the higher alcohols in the azeotrope and the added water are combined with water from the hexane extract and sent to a water stripper. After removing most of the water the remainder of the material in the stripper, which includes alcohols, hexane and some water, is recycled to the zone in which the azeotrope is formed.
