Abstract

Mixtures of o- and p-dichlorbenzenes are separated by the addition of chlorsulphonic acid in the cold, whereby the o-dichlorbenzene is converted to a sulphochloride, and the p-dichlorbenzene which is substantially unaffected, may be separated in known manner. According to the example chlorsulphonic acid is added to a mixture containing ortho and para dichlorbenzenes in a ratio of 5 to 1, at a temperature of 15 DEG C. The product on fractional distillation yields o-dichlorbenzene sulphochloride, p-dichlorbenzene, and some mixture of the two dichlorbenzenes.
