Abstract

The production of aldehydes by reaction of carbon monoxide with a cyclic hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon and aluminium chloride under pressure, is facilitated by adding initially an aldehyde-aluminium chloride complex which is obtainable by the same reaction. The hydrocarbon may be aromatic or cycloparaffinic, such as benzene, alkyl benzene, naphthalene, anthracene, and cyclohexane; derivatives such as chlorbenzene may also be used. An example describes the reaction of carbon monoxide with benzene, aluminium chloride and aluminium chloride complex at 68 atmospheres and 25 DEG C.
