[Class 70] [Also in Group IV] In preparing resinous rubber isomers as described in the parent Specification by heating rubber with a phenol and an acid or salt having an isomerizing action, the reaction is carried out under pressure at a temperature above the boiling-point of the phenol. Artificial rubber prepared by polymerizing hydrocarbons, e.g., butadiene alone or in mixture with other vinyl compounds may be treated. The reaction mixture may be freed from water by distillation before the beginning of the reaction. Oxygen may be displaced from the reaction chamber by an inert gas such as carbon, dioxide or nitrogen. Boron fluoride and its compound with acetic acid may be used as isomerizing agents.
