Abstract

Polychlornaphthalenes are produced by chlorinating naphthalene in two stages, first in presence of a halogen-carrying catalyst at temperatures between 85 DEG and 110 DEG C. and secondly in the presence of a halogen-carrying catalyst above 130 DEG C. Suitable catalysts are ferric chloride, antimony tri-or penta-chloride. In an example anhydrous ferric chloride is added to molten naphthalene and the mixture is chlorinated in two stages. The products may be heated with a basic substance such as lime and distilled preferably under reduced pressure. Specification 291,849, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], is referred to.
