Abstract

A tetrahalogenpyrenequinone obtained by halogenating pyrenequinone is reacted with an amine having at the nitrogen atom at least one replaceable hydrogen atom to give products which are vat-dyes for vegetable fibres such as cotton. Condensation may be effected in the presence of a diluent such as amyl alcohol, nitrobenzene, tetrachlorethane, chlornaphthalene, benzene, trichlorbenzene, pyridine and in presence of an agent which binds acid with or without addition of a substance which promotes splitting off of hydrogen halide, for instance, copper or sulphur. In examples, various tetrahalogenpyrenequinones obtained according to Specification 443,408 or by brominating the pyrenequinone in concentrated sulphuric acid or chlorinating it in trichlorbenzene containing a little iodine or antimony pentachloride are condensed with aniline, p - anisidine, b - naphthylamine, 2.5 - dichloraniline, o-anisidine, benzidine and 3-chlor-4-aminotoluene, and a further example is given illustrating the dyeing of cotton with one of the products.
