287,020. Cassella & Co., Ges., L. Nov. 3, 1926. Addition to 260,998. Halogen derivatives of anthanthrone. - The process of the parent Specification, according to which anthanthrone is halogenated under mild conditions by means of a halogen or halogenating agent preferably in presence of a solvent or diluent, is modified in one' of the following ways : -(a) the halogenation is carried out while employing an excess of the liquid halogen or halogenating agent, as diluent ; (b) the halogen or halogenating agent is employed in the form of gas or vapour in the absence of a diluent ; (c) anthanthrone is subjected in succession to chlorination and bromination or vice versa; (d) sulphuryl chloride is employed as chlorinating agent. According to examples (1) anthanthrone is brominated with an excess of liquid bromine in the presence or not of a little iodine, or with bromine vapour in presence of iodine : (2) chlorine is passed over finely divided anthanthrone mixed with a, little iodine or ferric chloride; (3) anthanthrone dissolved in weak fuming sulphuric acid containing a little iodine is treated with sufficient bromine to introduce one bromine atom and then with gaseous chlorine to introduce one chlorine atom into the molecule: the product dyes cotton in orange shades intermediate between those given by the products containing only chlorine or only bromine: (4) anthanthrone is treated with sulphuryl chloride in nitrobenzene in presence of iodine or ferric chloride.
