Anthraquinone-acridones are made by introducing one or more halogen atoms into the benzene ring of a 4-amino-3-halogenanthraquinone-1 :2- acridone by halogenation in the customary manner or by treatment of 1-amino-2-4-dihalogenanthraquinones with halogen anthranilic acids or salts thereof, in presence of an acid fixing agent and a catalytically active substance such as cupric chloride, if necessary in a suitable solvent, and condensing the resulting product with ring closure by treatment with an acid condensing agent, such as concentrated sulphuric acid or chlorsulphonic acid. In examples (1) 1-amino-2:4-dibromoanthraquinone is condensed with potassium-2-amino-3 :5-dichlorobenzoate, the product boiled with dilute hydrochloric acid, and the ring closed with concentrated sulphuric acid. The product dyes cotton bluish-green shades; (2) 4 - amino - 3 - bromoanthraquinonel: 2-acridine is chlorinated by passing chlorine through the solution. The product dyes cotton bluish-green shades. The aminohalogenanthraquinoneacridones can be obtained from the corresponding dihalogenaminoanthraquinones by treatment with anthranilic acid and subsequent closing of the ring.
