Abstract

New tribenzoylamino-trianthrimide carbazoles are made by heating a 4.5-dihalogen-1-benzoylaminoanthraquinone with 1-amino-4 and/or 5-benzoylaminoanthraquinone, and carbazolizing the resulting trianthrimides. The heating is carried out in a high-boiling inert organic solvent such as nitrobenzene in presence of an acid binding agent and a copper salt catalyst. Carbazolization may be carried out by heating with sulphuric acid or aluminium chloride, followed by oxidation with bichromate, or alkaline hypochlorite. The products dye cotton brown shades. In examples, 4.5-dichloro-1-benzoylaminoanthraquinone is reacted with (1) 1 - amino - 5 - benzoylaminoanthraquinone; (2) 1-amino-4-benzoylaminoanthraquinone; (3) a mixture of 1-amino-4- and 1-amino-5-benzoylaminoanthraquinones, followed in each case by carbazolization.
