Abstract

Anthrimides are prepared from an anthraquinone - 2.1 - (N), 11.21 - (N) - 61 - halogen-benzacridone or 61 - halogen - naphthacridone (in which the 51-position is free or is occupied by a group which does not hinder subsequent ring-closure, and in which the 31- and 41-positions of the benzene nucleus, and the 31-, 41-, 71- and 81-positions of the naphthalene nucleus may carry alkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, or halogen) and 4-, 5-, or 8-aminoanthraquinone-2.1 - (N), 11.21 - (N) - benzacridone (which may carry alkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, or halogen in 31-, 41 and 51-positions and alkyl, alkoxy, or aryloxy in 61-position), by heating in an anhydrous diluent, such as nitrobenzene or naphthalene, in presence of a copper condensing agent and an acid-binding agent. The anthrimides, which dye vegetable fibres grey to green shades, may then be carbazolised with aluminium chloride in an anhydrous diluent, to give dyes of corinth to navy-blue shades. Where the first-mentioned reactant has an aryloxy group in 31-position, carbazolisation occurs simultaneously with anthrimide formation. In examples, anthraquinone 2.1-(N), 11.21 - (N) - 4 - amino - 41 - chlorobenzacridon is condensed to the anthrimide, followed by carbazolisation, with the following: (1) anthraquinone - 2.1 - (N), 11.21 - (N) - 31.61-dichlorobenzacridone, or (2) the corresponding 31 - methyl - 61 - chloro body, or (3) the corresponding 31 - methoxy - 61 - chloro body, or (4) the corresponding 31-phenoxy-61-chloro body, a separate carbazolisation step being unnecessary in this last case. Also (5) anthraquinone - 2.1 - (N), 11.21 - (N) - 4 - amino benzacridone is similarly reacted with anthraquinone - 2.1 - (N), 11.21 - (N), 31.61 - dichlorobenzacridone.
