Abstract

Anthraquinone vat dyes, dyeing in green shades, are obtained by the interaction of a hydroxylated anthranol derived from alizarine with a tetra-halogenothiophen, either simultaneously with, or subsequent to, alkylation; in the latter case the alkylation must be partial only, so that a free hydroxyl group is present. The reaction is effected in the presence of a solvent or diluent, such as trichlorbenzene or naphthalene, and an acid-binding agent may be added if desired. The products may be halogenated to produce further vat dyes. In examples, (1) alizarine is reduced to the anthranol with zinc dust and ammonia, and the product heated with commercial trichlorbenzene, containing tetrachlorthiophen, sodium carbonate, and dimethylsulphate, (2) the anthranol obtained from alizarine is heated with tetrachlorthiophen, naphthalene, dimethylsulphate and sodium carbonate, and (3) 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyanthranol is heated with tetrachlorthiophen or tetrabromthiophen in naphthalene. The same product is obtained in all the examples, the whole of the halogen being eliminated.
