Abstract

Halogenated anthraquinone benzacridones.-Anthraquinone benzacridones or their halogen derivatives are treated with agents capable of replacing oxygen by halogen, preferably in an inert organic solvent or diluent, and the products halogenated with an agent customarily employed for replacing hydrogen by halogen and in presence of an organic solvent or diluent. Phosphorus pentachloride or thionyl chloride may be used for the first stage, and the soluble compounds thus formed are converted by the subsequent halogenation into dyestuffs or intermediate products which latter, by treatment with agents splitting off halogen, such as phenol or sulphur dioxide, are also converted to dyestuffs. In examples (1) trichloranthraquinone-1,2-benzacridone (prepared by halogenating the benzacridone in nitrobenzene with sulphuryl chloride in the presence of chloriodine) is treated with phosphorus pentachloride in trichlorbenzene and then with chlorine to give a red-violet dyestuff; phosphorus trichloride or thionyl chloride may also be used in the first stage, but in the latter case the final product is treated in o-dichlorbenzene with phenol to give a pink-dyeing benzacridone; when the above treatment with phosphorus pentachloride is followed by a treatment with thionyl chloride the product is also further treated with phenol as above: (2) anthraquinone benzacridone (example of Specification 12653/09, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], is treated with phosphorus pentachloride in trichlorbenzene and then chlorinated; the product dyes bluish-red shades; when treated with phosphorus pentachloride in nitrobenzene followed by bromination a product dyeing yellow-red shades is obtained. Specification 295,770, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], also is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 295,770.
