Abstract
Halogenated anthraquinone benzacridones.-In the treatment of 1-anilido-2-methylanthraquinone or 1-o-toluidoanthraquinone in organic media with chlorine or chlorinating agents as described in Specifications 5534/13 and 14360/14, [both in Class 2(iii), Dyes &c.], a mixture of products is obtained; the constituent which is more readily soluble in the organic solvent is separated and heated in such solvent to an elevated temperature or treated with reducing agents whereby chlorine is split off and a new dyestuff obtained dyeing brilliant blueish red shades. The initial chlorination is preferably effected as rapidly as possible and in the absence of moisture; the mother-liquor is separated from the less soluble constituents precipitating out and either heated to boiling or boiled with an agent such as phenol. Examples are given.
