Abstract

Vat dyestuffs are prepared by subjecting decacyclene, in the presence of chlorsulphonic acid to sulphurization and halogenation, either simultaneously or successively. In examples: (1) decacyclene is treated in chlorsulphonic acid with sulphur chloride which effects both sulphurization and chlorination; the product is refluxed with sodium sulphide to obtain a dyestuff soluble in sodium sulphide which dyes cotton copper brown tints, and a dyestuff insoluble in sodium sulphide which dyes cotton orange tints from a hydrosulphite vat; (2) the crude dyestuff of example 1 of Specification 468,416 is treated with chlorine in chlorsulphonic acid to give a dyestuff insoluble in sodium sulphide; (3) decacyclene is treated in chlorsulphonic acid with sulphur and then with chlorine. Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of the products of the examples and also of a product obtained by brominating the crude dyestuff prepared by treating decacyclene in chlorsulphonic acid with sulphur.
