Abstract

Indophenols derived from a carbazol- and a nitrosophenol are treated with dilute mineral acids to give intermediate-products, p which may be converted into sulphuretted dyestuffs by treating with sulphurizing agents. The treatment with dilute mineral acids is continued until a test portion no longer dissolves in alcohol to give the blue to blue-violet colour of the indophenol. In examples: (1) the carbazol nitrosophenol is heated with dilute sulphuric acid: (2) the intermediate-product derived from nitrosophenol and carbazol is introduced into a polysulphide solution and the mass dried and baked after the addition of salt and sulphur; a dyestuff is obtained by passing air into a solution of the product obtained by heating with water and sodium sulphide. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the preparation of sulphuretted dyestuffs from the products obtained from the indophenols derived from carbazol and nitroso-o-cresol or 1 : 2-benzocarbazol and quinonechlorimide. The use of 1 : 2-naphthocarbazol is mentioned. 1 : 2-Naphthocarbazol is prepared by reducing the 1 : 2-phthaloylcarbazol described in Specification 433,574. 1 : 2 Benzocarbazol is prepared by Bucherer's process. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
