338,182. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Aug. 7, 1929. Halogenated anthraquinone-2.1-benzacridones. -4-Bz-3-4-5-tetrahalogenanthraquinone - 2 - 1 - benzacridones are prepared by treating anthraquinone-2-1-benzacridones halogenated at least in the Bz4-position and having the Bz2-position free from halogen, with halogenating agents in the presence of organic solvents. When using starting materials having the 4-position free only chlorinating agents are to be employed since bromine enters the 4-position only in small amounts. Or the same bodies may be obtained by condensing 1-4-dihalogenanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acids or their esters with 2-3-4-trihalogenanilines, acridone ring closure then being effected according to known methods. In examples (1) 1.4-dichloroanthraquinone-2-carobxylic acid benzyl ester is heated with 2-3-4-trichloraniline, the product saponified and ring-closed; (2) Bz-3-4-5-trichloranthraquinone-2.1 - benzacridone (prepared by condensation of 1-chloranthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid benzyl ester with 2-3-4- trichloraniline, saponification and ring closure) is treated in nitrobenzene and in presence of a little iodine with sulphuryl chloride; (3) Bz4- chloroanthraquinone-2-1-benzacridone (prepared by condensing 1-chloranthraquinone with 4-chlor- 2-aminobenzoic acid, followed by ring closure) is treated in nitrobenzene in presence of a little iodine with sulphuryl chloride. These products dye brilliant red shades which are distinguished by their high brilliancy; they also differ from the tetrachloro derivatives obtainable according to Specincations 5534/13 and 295,770 by being converted into Bz-3-4-5-trichloranthraquinone-2-1- benzacridones on treatment with diethylaniline and a little copper.
