Abstract
Perylene quinones are obtained by heating halogen derivatives of perylene with concentrated sulphuric acid and precipitating the product with water. According to the examples, (1) 3 : 9-dibromperylene of m.p. 278 DEG C. and concentrated sulphuric acid are heated together for some time, the product poured into water, and the violet precipitate crystallized from glacial acetic acid; the vat is red with a green fluorescence; (2) the treatment of 3 : 10-dibromperylene of m.p. 189 DEG C. in the same way yields a brown product which gives a red vat; on repeated vatting and reoxidation, with subsequent crystallization, a product identical with perylene-3 : 10-quinone results. The bromo- and chloroperylenes described in Specifications 232,261 and 232,266 react in a similar manner.
