Abstract

Nitrodibenzanthrone is purified by dissolving it in concentrated sulphuric acid and fractionally precipitating by addition of suitable diluents, such as dilute sulphuric acid, water, or acetic acid. The product dyes cotton blue shades from a hydrosulphite vat, becoming clear green on exposure to air, and violet-grey to violet-black on treatment with hypochlorite. The nitrodibenzanthrone used may be prepared by nitrating either crude or pure dibenzanthrone. The purified product heated to 180 DEG C. with aluminium chloride in nitrobenzene gives a product dyeing green shades, which become black on treatment with hypochlorite.
