Chlorbromanthraquinone benzacridones are prepared by treating chloranthraquinone-benzacridones with brominating agents, or bromanthroquinone-benzacridones with chlorinating agents, or anthraquinone-benzacridones with chlorinating and brominating agents simultaneously, in organic solvents and preferably in presence of halogenating catalysts. Suitable organic diluents are nitrobenzene and trichlorbenzene and suitable catalysts are sulphur, iodine, metals or metal salts such as iron, antimony and the halides thereof. In examples chlorbromanthraquinone-benzacridones are prepared by treating (1) monobromoanthraquinone-2.1-benzacridone (obtainable by brominating the acridone in nitrobezene at 110- 120‹ C. with the aid of iodine) in nitrobenzene with either sulphuryl chloride or chlorine, iodine being present as catalyst, or (2) 4-chloranthraquinone-2.1-benzacridone in nitrobenzene with bromine, or (3) anthraquinone-2.1-benzacridone in nitrobenzene with bromine and sulphuryl chloride simultaneously, iodine being present as catalyst. These products give blue-red dyeings from a violet vat. The Provisional Specification refers to the preparation of chlorbromo-derivatives of anthraquinone-acridones generally. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 7923/10.
