Abstract

333,762. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.), Sept. 4, 1929. Chlordimethoxydibenzanthrones are made by treating pure dimethoxydibenzanthrone obtainable according to Specification 181,304, in an inert organic solvent with a chlorinating agent, in presence of a metal salt as catalyst, acid-fixing agents being added if desired. According to examples, pure dimethoxydibenzanthrone obtainable by the process of Example A of Specification 181,304, is chlorinated (1) in nitrobenzene with sulphuryl chloride in presence of iron chloride to give a green dye, and (2) in nitrobenzene, with sulphuryl chloride in presence of iron chloride and quick-lime or magnesium oxide to give a yellower dye. Iron fluoride, ferric sulphate, nickel chloride, cobaltous chloride, and antimony pentachloride are also specified as halogenating catalysts. Specification 205,304 also is referred to.
