Abstract

514,857. Dyes and lakes. JOHNSON, G. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). May 17, 1938, No. 14732. [Classes 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] Water-soluble dyestuffs of the phthalocyanine series containing halogen are manufactured by treating phthalocyanine sulphonic acids containing at least three sulphonic acid groups, or salts thereof, with halogenating agents for such a length of time that the final products are still soluble in water. Suitable starting materials are obtainable by treating metal-free or metal-containing, e.g., copper, nickel or aluminium, phthalocyanines with oleum or chlorsulphonic acid or both, and they may contain sulphochloride groups as well as sulphonic groups. The halogenation may be effected with chlorine, bromine or sulphuryl chloride, if desired under pressure, and preferably in the presence of a solvent or diluent, e.g., trichloracetic acid, commercial trichlorobenzene or phthalic anhydride, or a melt of anhydrous aluminium halide and alkali halide. The products dye vegetable and animal fibres, e.g., cotton, silk or wool, or regenerated cellulose, blue-green to green shades, and yield colour lakes with metal salts usually employed for the production of colour lakes from colouring matters containing sulphonic groups, e.g., salts of alkaline-earth metals or of zinc, manganese or aluminium. In examples: (1) a sulphonic acid obtained by treating copper phthalocyanine with oleum is introduced into a melt of aluminium chloride and sodium chloride, and chlorine is passed in at 150‹ C. ; (2) a sulphonic acid obtained by treating copper phthalocyanine with chlorosulphonic acid is similarly chlorinated; (3) a sulphonic acid obtained by treating nickel phthalocyanine with chlorosulphonic acid is similarly chlorinated ; (4) a sulphonic acid obtained by treating aluminium phthalocyanine with chlorsulphonic acid is similarly chlorinated ; (5) a copper phthalocyanine tetrasulphonic acid is introduced into a melt of aluminium chloride and sodium chloride, and bromine or iodine is added ; (6) copper phthalocyanine tetrasulphonic acid is introduced intoa melt of phthalic anhydride, and chlorine is passed in.
