Abstract
2<1> : 5<1>-Dihalogen-4<1>-alkyl-diphenyl methane-2-carboxylic acids (benzyl-o-benzoic acids) are obtained by causing halogens or agents yielding halogen to react on the corresponding alkylbenzylbenzoic acids in the presence of inert solvents and halogenating catalysts. According to examples, 4<1>-methylbenzyl-o-benzoic acids (obtainable by reducing the corresponding benzoylbenzoic acid), and its 3<1>-chloro derivative, are chlorinated and brominated in solvents such as trichlorobenzene, glacial acetic acid, nitrobenzene, and carbon tetrachloride.
