Abstract
333,568. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Feb. 15, 1929. Benzanthrone derivatives are obtained by introducing halogen, nitro and hydroxy substituents according to known methods into benzanthrone- Bz-1-alkyl ethers having the Bz-2-position free, whereby the said substituents enter the Bz-2-position. According to examples, Bz-1-methoxybenzanthrone, 6-chlor- and 8-chlor-Bz1-methoxybenzanthrones and 6-nitro-Bz1-methoxybenzanthrone are nitrated in nitrobenzene to give the corresponding Bz-2-nitro derivatives; Bz-1-methoxybenzanthrone is brominated and chlorinated in glacial acetic acid, and Bz1-ethoxy benzanthrone is chlorinated in glacial acetic acid, to give the corresponding Bz-2-halogen derivatives; and Bz-1- methoxybenzanthrone is oxidized with manganese dioxide in concentrated sulphuric acid, to give Bz1 : Bz2-dihydroxybenzanthrone which may be methylated to Bz2 : Bz2<1>-dimethoxybenzanthrone. The Bz1-methoxy benzanthrone, and its 6-chlor, 8-chlor- and 6-nitro derivatives are obtained according to Specification 291,131 and the Bz-1- ethoxy derivative is obtained by treating the Bz-1-hydroxy compound with p-toluenesulphonic acid ethyl ester.
