Abstract

Benzanthrone dyes are obtained by nitrating Bzl : Bzl<1>-dibenzanthronyl or a derivative thereof in nitrobenzene solution with nitric acid, and subjecting the nitro derivative, if desired after reduction, to caustic alkali fusion in presence of a solvent, at a temperature not exceeding 130 DEG C. Mono and di-nitro bodies are formed in the first instance. According to examples (1) Bzl : Bzl<1>-dibenzanthronyl is nitrated in nitrobenzene with varying amounts of nitric acid; (2) the di-nitro-product is reduced with aluminium and sulphuric acid or sodium sulphide, and the product condensed with alcoholic potash; (3) the dinitro-product itself condensed with alcoholic potash. Specifications 251,313, 319,365, and 336,268, [all in Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) includes also examples of the nitration performed in sulphuric acid solution, and of the nitration of a b -b <1>-dichloro derivative, (obtained by oxidizing the b -chlorobenzanthrone produced from b -chloroanthraquinone), followed by reduction and fusion as above. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
