Abstract

Mixtures of dibenzanthrone with nitrodibenzanthrone are prepared for the dyeing of cotton in black shades from the hydrosulphite vat. The two dyestuffs may be mixed together or dibenzanthrone may be nitrated under conditions which will produce the requisite mixture; for example, dibenzanthrone may be treated with nitric acid of strength insufficient to dissolve the dyestuff, preferably with addition of a substance such as urea or hydrazine which destroys nitrous acid, or it may be treated with the requisite quantity of concentrated nitric acid in a diluent. The pure dibenzanthrone obtained by revatting crude dibenzanthrone or that obtained by alkali fusion of benzanthrone in the presence of aniline or other diluent, may be used; the nitrodibenzanthrone used may be either the crude product obtained according to Specification 1818/05 or that product purified as described in Specification 220,212. A small addition of a yellowish or other suitable vat dyestuff may be made in order to produce the desired shade of black. Examples are given of mixtures of dibenzanthrone and nitrodibenzanthrone and of the nitration of dibenzanthrone with diluted nitric acid with addition or not of hydrazine hydrate, or with concentrated nitric acid in nitrobenzene; sulphuric acid may also be used as the diluent.
