Isodibenzanthrone dyes.-Vat-dyes are obtained by treating with alkaline condensing agents ethers of oxybenzanthrones halogenated in the Bz 1-position but having a free 2-position. The use of the compounds made by nitrating a Bzlhalogenbenzanthrone, reducing, exchanging the amino group for hydroxyl and alkylating the product is excluded. According to an example Bz1 chlor-Bz2-methoxybenzanthrone is heated with alcoholic potash ; the product may be purified by boiling with solvents such as dichlorbenzene or by fractional precipitation from sulphuric acid. Bz1-halogenalhoxybenzanthrones can be obtained by treating alkoxybenzanthrones under mild conditions in an inert organic solvent such as nitrobenzene with halogenating, agents such as sulphuryl chloride. Bzl-chlor-Bz2-methoxybenzanthrone can be obtained by this method or by chlorinating Bz2-oxybenzanthrone and methylating the product.
