Abstract

Nitro-b -hydroxypyridine and its homologues are prepared by first treating b -hydroxypyridine or a homologue with nitric acid and then decomposing the resulting nitrate with sulphuric acid to eliminate water. Examples are given of the production of the nitro derivatives of b -hydroxypyridine, the hydroxypicoline obtainable according to Specification 335,818, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], as well as 3-hydroxy-4-methylpyridine and 3-hydroxy-2-methyl-5-ethylpyridine obtainable by the process of Specification 348,988.
