Abstract
Pigments consisting of ferrie oxide are obtained by reacting the sludge formed in the reduction of aromatic nitro-compounds to amines by means of iron with 30-50 per cent of the amount of sulphuric acid chemically equivalent to the iron present, and setting and calcining the resulting mixture. Spent acid from the nitration of benzol &c. may be used without separation of the nitric acid also present, and may provide sufficient acid for the first step of the process.
