Abstract
In the manufacture of dimethylolurea from about theoretical proportions of urea and formaldehyde in neutral or weakly alkaline aqueous media, i.e. media of a pH value of 7 to 9, at 20-45 DEG C., the resulting solution of dimethylolurea is concentrated to a content of dimethylolurea of about 55-60 per cent by weight, at a temperature up to 45 DEG C., either directly after mixing the reaction components or up to one hour thereafter, and the crystal pulp is dried at a temperature not exceeding 45 DEG C. after allowing it to stand a short time, e.g. half a day. Preferably during the process of concentration the water vapour is carried off, e.g. by working in vacuo or by leading through the solution a current of an inert gas such as nitrogen. The heat of reaction supplies most of the heat necessary to distil off the water. In order to p complete the separation of the dimethylolurea, the reaction mixture may be cooled externally down to 15 DEG C.
