Abstract

1441422 Sulphur dioxide removal DAVY POWERGAS GmbH 21 Nov 1973 [22 Nov 1972] 53969/73 Addition to 1376404 Heading C1A Sulphur dioxide is removed from an off-gas by washing with an aqueous solution containing ammonium sulphite and the resulting wash solution is worked up by evaporating the solution, by direct heat exchange with hot reaction gas from the second stage of the process, down to a water content of between 15 and 55 wt. per cent, decompositing the concentrated mixture at a temperature of from 900-1250‹ C. with simultaneous combustion of a carbon- and/or sulphur-containing gas, and working up the resulting reaction gas, after it has been used in the evaporation stage, to form sulphuric acid or elemental sulphur. The process is characterized in that before or during the evaporation stage, the wash solution is supplied either with no sulphuric acid or with an amount of sulphuric acid which is insufficient to liberate sulphur dioxide from all the ammonium sulphite and/or ammonium bisulphite present in the solution. Preferably, the amount of sulphuric acid added is sufficient to liberate sulphur dioxide from up to 83% (and particularly from 10 to 20%) of the ammonium sulphite and/or ammonium bisulphite present in the solution; the wash solution is evaporated down to a water content of between 25 and 50 wt. per cent; an oxygen content of between 2 and 10 vol. per cent is maintained in the reaction gas leaving the decomposition step; and the reaction gas is washed after having been used in the evaporation stage and the resulting wash acid is added to the wash solution to be treated. In a preferred embodiment, the evaporation stage takes place in a tower in which the reaction gas is flowing upwardly, and into which the wash solution and sulphuric acid are sprayed, at least part of the sulphuric acid being sprayed i.e. downstream of the spraying of the gas with the wash solution.
