Abstract
Solid combustible polymers of formaldehyde which can be used as fuel for automatic lighters are obtained by treating formaldehyde or incombustible polymers thereof such as paraformaldehyde with sulphuric or phosphoric acids of at least 2 per cent concentration at temperatures not exceeding 60 DEG C. The lower the reaction temperature, the greater should be the concentration of the acid employed, for example, 20-30 per cent sulphuric acid may be used to treat formaldehyde or its polymers at normal temperatures for several hours, or paraformaldehyde may be treated with 5-25 per cent sulphuric acid at 55-60 DEG C. for 1-3 hours. The products can be pressed into shaped pieces. According to examples (1) formaldehyde solution is mixed with concentrated sulphuric acid and left for 10-20 hours; the precipitated product is filtered off, washed with water and dried, (2) paraformaldehyde is treated with 30 per cent sulphuric acid, allowed to stand for 10 hours, and the product is filtered off and washed free from acid; the mother liquor containing sulphuric acid may be used to convert further paraformaldehyde by heating it therewith in a closed vessel for an hour at 60 DEG C., and (3) paraformaldehyde is mixed with 45 per cent phosphoric acid and allowed to stand for 50 hours at 25 DEG C.; water is added, and the product is filtered off, washed, and dried. Specifications 25830/13 and 247,955, [both in Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], are referred to.
