130,382. Holliday, L. B., (trading as Holliday & Co., L. B.), and Clayton, A. Feb. 7, 1918. Picric acid is prepared by treating sulphonated phenol with a mixture of strong nitric acid and strong sulphuric acid; the mixed acid is added in two portions, the first (say, one-fourth of the whole) at or below 45‹ C., and after stirring for about an hour, the remainder, heated to or above 70‹ C., is added and the mixture heated to complete the reaction.
