Abstract

4 : 41-Dinitro-2-aminodiphenyl is prepared by treating 41-nitro-2-aminodiphenyl at a low temperature, which does not exceed about 15 DEG C., with concentrated nitric acid or a metallic nitrate in the presence of an excess of concentrated sulphuric acid, or by treating 2-aminodiphenyl at a similar temperature with not less than two molecular equivalents of concentrated nitric acid or a metallic nitrate in the presence of an excess of concentrated sulphuric acid. Suitable metallic nitrates are potassium and sodium nitrate. The molecular proportion of nitric acid or nitrate and sulphuric acid to 41-nitro-2-aminodiphenyl may be in the ratio of substantially 1 : 1 and at least 20 : 1 respectively. The molecular proportion of nitric acid or nitrate to 2-aminodiphenyl may be substantially 2 : 1. In examples, 4 : 41-dinitro-2-aminodiphenyl is prepared by nitrating 41-nitro-2-aminodiphenyl and 2-aminodiphenyl. A sample of 4 : 41-dinitro-2-aminodiphenyl prepared from 2-aminodiphenyl has been furnished under Sect. 2 (5).
