Abstract
The invention comprises 5,51-dinitro-2,21-dichlorobenzil of the formula <FORM:0807985/IV (b)/1> and a process for the preparation thereof which comprises nitrating 2,21-dichlorobenzil. Nitration may be effected using nitric acid alone or in sulphuric or acetic acid medium, or a mixture of alkali metal nitrate and sulphuric acid. An example illustrates the nitration. 2,2-Dichlorobenzil is obtained by the oxidation of the corresponding benzoin which is obtained by the action of potassium cyanide upon o - chlorobenzaldehyde in aqueous alcohol solution.
