Abstract
Dinitro compounds are prepared by adding a solution of an alkali metal nitrite to a mixture of a solution of an alkali metal hydroxide and a mononitro compound, and then adding the mixture to a solution of silver nitrate while maintaining the pH at from 4 to 5. In an example sodium hydroxide solution is mixed with 2-nitropropane, a solution of sodium nitrite is added, and the mixture is poured into a cooled solution of silver nitrate; the precipitate which forms is removed and the solution is extracted with ether and 2,2-dinitropropane is recovered from the ether extract. Other dinitro compounds which may be prepared from corresponding mononitro compounds are 2,2- dinitroethane, 2,2-dinitrobutane, 2,2-dinitroethanol, 2,2-dinitropropanol, 2,2-dinitrobutanol, 1,1-dinitrocyclopentane and 1,1-dinitrocyclohexane.
